How I Meditate

How I Meditate

Meditation is the way you let your inner being teach you alignment.

-a.hicks

I meditate every day for 15-20 min.

{Right now} my meditation looks like this, however, I ebb and flow from sitting up, laying down, guided, not guided, white noise to silence. There is no “right” or “wrong” position to be in, whatever assists you in quieting your mind is the right way for you, right now.

As my practice has strengthened, I notice I sit with the intent of receiving answers. I have to remind myself to simply sit in the stillness, knowing answers will come in their perfect time and space. I hold too much pressure to receive and often leave meditation in frustration. I have been working on the simple act of being still. I make sure I set my intention to just be before I begin.

I start by scanning my body and bringing my attention to areas where I am holding tension. Is my stomach sensitive today? Do my feet ache? Am I holding stress in my neck? I bring my breath to these areas of my body to soften them. Inhaling with them in my mind and exhaling the tension to release.

Then I count each exhale 1-10 and back again. Until I drift to a space of mindfulness. Yes, I still often have thoughts that come to the forefront. I see them and then go back to my breath. I don’t overanalyze my thoughts. Softening the space behind my eyes helps as well.

Each practice and each day feels different. What stays the same is the way I feel after the 15 minutes is over.

Refreshed. Less anxious. Calm. Aware. Loved. Purpose.

After years of practice, my body knows meditation is a need and craves the time. Meditation has changed many aspects of my life. It has brought light to dark moments in my life, past, and present. It has allowed me to lengthen my reaction time, to be more aware of my thoughts and speech.

I have had the pleasure of guiding many of you in meditation and though I never thought this was the path I would be walking, I feel very fortunate to create such a space for others to connect with their inner being. It has married my passion for writing with my passion for stillness and sharing such creations is an honor.

Start with 5 min a day—I know you will feel a difference throughout your day. When you give your mind that break, you will know when you are ready to add on 5 more min. Ten minutes a day—you will be shocked that you are able to just sit. Pictures, colors, thoughts, that come to your mind’s eye will not be random, they will be answers, clarity, and comfort. You’ll want to add 5 more min and others will see a change in you. Fifteen minutes a day—it won’t always be easy. You’ll make excuses as to why you should skip your daily meditation because you’ll forget what it was like to not have a daily meditation practice.

Don’t judge yourself on how long it takes you to build up your time. Don’t judge yourself for doing what your brain is meant to do-think. Don’t judge yourself if you have to lay down, but your friend can meditate sitting up.

Meditation is a state of allowing.

There is no resistance in those 5, 10, and 15 minutes where you reconnect with everything the Universe has to offer you!

GO set that timer for 5 min and start your meditation practice TODAY!
